The United States is taking a complacent attitude towards Israel’s military aggression. This is what Dr. Hannan Ashrawi told Albawaba.Com regarding the escalating violence which has resulted in the death of thirty Palestinians and the injury of more than seven hundred.
Dr. Hannan was asked to describe the situation and comment on whether military might is being used to pressure the Palestinians to accept a compromise. She said that Israel is trying to send the Palestinians a message. Otherwise, she added she could not justify “ the bloody aggression by the Israeli military.” She added that Israelis must understand that the cost of this message is very high and they should not underestimate the Palestinians. She added that they must remember the Intifadah, and that the Palestinians can overcome anything.
As for her assessment of the situation, Dr. Ashrawi said that it was ‘critical’ adding that the military action which had taken place over the past few days speaks louder than words, calling it a part of the Israeli mentality and behavior. She said “Killing in cold blood and barbaric actions make peace worthless and the long term repercussions of what’s taking place are dangerous not only on the basis of trust, but also on the peace process as a whole.”
She added that the situation has become extremely explosive and very difficult to control.
When asked about the recent reports regarding Israeli military taking over the Palestinian territory, she said “If Israel has reached this level of stupidity than again, anything is possible, but than again the cost will be very high.”
