The aftermath of Algeria's 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso during the World Cup football qualifiers turned tragic after 12 people died and 240 were injured during the nationwide celebrations, Algerian authorities said Wednesday.
A government statement issued on late Wednesday said that five celebrating fans were killed when the van they were driving in slid off the road into a ravine in the mountain town of Bejaia, east of Algiers, while four others died in the southern city of Biskra in a car accident, the Associated Press reported.
The remaining three died in other towns, the statement added without elaborating, according to AP.
All across Algeria people poured into the streets to celebrate their team's qualification for the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil, with excited youths taking to their cars on the streets despite Tuesday night's heavy rainfall.
