ALBAWABA- The mayor of the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy has confirmed that a Russian missile strike on the city’s central area has left at least 20 people dead or injured.
The attack occurred on Palm Sunday morning—a significant day in the Christian calendar when many Ukrainians traditionally attend church services in preparation for Easter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the Russian missile strike on the northeastern city of Sumy, calling it an act of terror on a sacred day.
In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy described the attack as a “terrible Russian ballistic missile strike” that hit a residential area, damaging homes, schools, and vehicles.
The strike occurred on Palm Sunday, a significant Christian holiday when many Ukrainians attend church.
“Only a scoundrel can act like this,” Zelenskyy said, mourning the civilians killed and injured in the attack. He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and noted that a rescue operation is currently underway, with emergency services responding on the ground.
Zelenskyy also urged a firm international response: “A tough reaction from the world is needed—by the United States, Europe, and all who seek an end to this war. Russia thrives on this terror and prolongs the conflict.”
He stressed that peace cannot be achieved without pressure on the aggressor, emphasizing that “talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and aerial bombs.”
The president called for Russia to be treated with the same resolve shown toward terrorists, reiterating the urgent need for global accountability.
