‘Just an Illusion’ to challenge the senses at MOE
Visitors to the Mall of the Emirates’ final Dubai Summer Surprises attraction may be forgiven for thinking their senses are playing tricks on them. They wouldn’t be wrong.
Starting from Sunday August 10th and running until 23 August, the ‘Just an Illusion’ exhibition will play with customers’ perceptions to create a whole new sensory experience, the aim being to challenge the way that people interpret the world and their surroundings.
In this environment, seeing is not necessarily believing, as customers enter a topsy turvy landscape. Optical illusions abound, seemingly distorting reality and revealing more of how our minds perceive what’s happening around us. The exhibition will leave many people scratching their heads and wondering, “How is this possible…?”
Mentioning just a few of the many exhibits at the show will give an idea of the tantalising experiences on offer for those who want to give their senses a workout. Helping the floor to come alive in the display is the Crazy Carpet; an interactive beneath-the-feet matting that projects constantly changing graphics as you stand over it. One minute you are on top of an aquarium looking down onto fish swimming underneath you, the next involved in a game of football, or steering a race car around a track. Another sudden shift in theme and you are transformed into a musician, banging out beats each time you step onto a drum, or a hunter, invited to stamp out a pesky mole that keeps popping up just away from where you are standing.

Moving on into the Topsy Turvy feature recreates the feeling of what it must be like to be able to walk on the ceiling of your house, as you witness all the fixtures and furnishings of a typical living room the wrong way up. Light fittings and lampshades appear as stools would do, extending upwards to your waist, while you instinctively cover your head, fearing that the sofa suspended above you on the ‘floor’ of this upside down abode will surely fall. However, it is all perfectly safe and this crazy feature is the perfect photo opportunity – you can reveal to family and friends your gravity defying experience.
The Just an Illusion experience is set to provide an alternative and thought provoking time-out from the popular stores and facilities at one of Dubai’s most frequented destinations. Visitors wishing to explore this last feature in the Mall of the Emirate’s Dubai Summer Surprises programme will find the same at the mall’s galleria. From Sunday through to Wednesday, the display will be open from 10am to 10pm and from Thursday to Saturday, 10am to midnight.
