A video of two girls laughing and briefly dancing together in a store in Saudi Arabia has gone viral, and caused predictable outrage on social media.
The video was captured during what appeared to be a phone or video call with a man during which one of the women opens her abaya and reveal parts of her waist. The two women appeared to be Saudis from their accents, the abayas and face veil they are wearing.
Additionally, the two women appeared wearing badges of a clothing store that was recognized by social media users and the background appeared behind him in the video.
Immediately, Saudis have taken to the hashtag: “#موظفه_تتعري_امام_الكميرات” which translates to: “A female employee strips in front of cameras” to express their outrage and frustration over such behaviour from Saudi women.
With more than 70,000 tweets using the hashtag, Saudis rowed over blaming the girl or the irresponsible person who was behind sharing the video on social media.
Translation: “I just want to say that those are the ones who called for freedom, those who said we are not animals to only stay at homes. Animals disowned you. Unfortunately, everytime we turn out to be a degraded society.”
Translation: “They distorted the image of niqabis everywhere. They distorted the image of the honorable women who works at companies. They distorted the image of the Saudi women in front of everyone. Strict punishment should be taken against those to make them a lesson to everyone.”
Well, this was the typical content of dozens of tweets shared by Saudis on the hashtag. However, many of them went to criticize the attackers accusing them of double standard when it comes to women.
Others chose to claim conspiracy theories behind the supposedly immodest behaviour of Saudi women, citing or appearing to suggest outside influence.
Translation: “Did you notice that hashtags that offend Saudi women and especially working women have been on the rise recently? Believe me, there are parties behind such hashtags and it is because the working Saudi women took their jobs like the Yemenis and Egyptians who used to work in stores. We are aware and we understand everything.”
This comes only a day after a similar hashtag went viral among Saudi social media users. The hashtag مصري يفطر مع سعودية which translates to “Egyptian man having breakfast with Saudi woman” went viral on Sunday after a viral video showed an Egyptian employee in one of the companies in Jeddah having breakfast with his Saudi female colleague.
