The Egyptian lawmaker who invited the Israeli ambassador for dinner last week was attacked by a colleague in parliament. Tawfik Okasha invited the Israeli ambassador to Egypt, Haim Koren, to dinner on live television. He then hosted Koren, with photographs of the two together going viral on social media, sparking controversy.

Several lawmakers demanded that Okasha be sacked for his actions, while one, Kamal Ahmed, threw a shoe at him in a fit of rage. Both Ahmed and Okasha were thrown out of the session by the speaker.

Before the opening of Sunday’s session, Okasha told local media that he had not done anything wrong because Egypt and Israel have full diplomatic relations.

Koren told Reuters about the meet up via telephone.

“He proposed the meeting, at which he raised ideas of us helping Egypt in the areas of water, agriculture and education - to try to set up a number of schools with Israeli training," he said.

“I offered to work on putting this together, and that we meet again. I will soon be inviting him over to our place. He showed great courage. He knew he would be attacked, and nonetheless he stood firm on his convictions.”
