At least 14 people were killed from a suicide bomb attack in Iraq's capital Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Iraqi officials told AFP that a suicide bomber detonated himself outside of a Shiite mosque in the downtown area of the capital as worshippers entered for noon prayers Tuesday.

In addition to the 14 killed, at least 26 others were also wounded.

Sectarian tensions have escalated dramatically over the past year in Iraq in part due to the neighboring conflict in Syria, but also due to the fact that many Sunnis feel marginalized politically and economically under the Shiite-majority government.

More than 8,868 people died last year due to sectarian violence in Iraq, according to Agence France Presse, and Iraq Body Count estimates that almost 5,000 people have died due to violence in Iraq in 2014 alone.
