Reuters reported Tuesday that the U.S. has decided to suspend all operations of the Syrian Embassy in Washington as well as its consulate counterparts in Michigan and Texas.

Diplomats and staff of the embassies and consulates who do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency have been instructed to leave the country immediately.

"We have determined it is unacceptable for individuals appointed by that regime to conduct diplomatic or consular operations in the United States," U.S. special envoy for Syria Daniel Rubinstein said in a statement.

Rubenstein was recently appointed and approved this month to replace former U.S. special envoy for Syria Robert Ford
