U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, recently denounced the widespread use of torture in Syria, the Associate Press reports.
Pillay says her office gathered reports of a “broad pattern of torture and ill-treatment” in government-run facilities, as well as some run by the opposition.
In a statement released Monday, Pillay said the abuses include rape, burnings, and beatings. The information comes from extensive testimony from victims and witnesses, reports AP.
Pillay has discovered pervasive abuses by both the Syrian government and rebel groups during Syria’s civil war.
