ALBAWABA – The United States, European Union, and United Kingdom announced the signing of the first international artificial intelligence (AI) agreement. The treaty aims to prevent the misuse of technology, the spread of misinformation spread, and the biased data in decision-making.

First AI international agreement

Under the new agreement, countries must implement new safety measures against any potential threats by artificial intelligence towards human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

It is worth noting that the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, the very first international treaty on artificial intelligence, was drafted by the Council of Europe, an international organization with the goal of upholding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Europe. The agreement was signed by the EU, the UK, and the US on Thursday.

The new AI agreement aims is to fill legal gaps that may arise from rapid technological progress, according to the Council of Europe. Additionally, AI systems must comply with rules and measure including the protection of personal data, non-discrimination, safe development, and human dignity.

Regulations and sanctions

According to the treaty, entities and individuals should be able to question decisions made by AI systems and file complaints with authorities. On the other hand, users of AI systems should be made aware that they are dealing with AI, not human beings.

Finally, in terms of banning and imposing sanctions, EU AI Act, a European Union regulation concerning artificial intelligence, bans programs that use facial recognition databases from closed-circuit television (CCTV) or the internet and bans systems that classify humans based on their social behaviors.
