ALBAWABA – South Korean app stores have removed DeepSeek, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, due to privacy concerns and ongoing reviews.

DeepSeek removed from South Korean App stores

Authorities in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, announced that the DeepSeek artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot will be removed from app stores pending privacy reviews and concerns.

Despite the fact that the new AI chatbot gained significant fame over the past few weeks, multiple countries are questioning its data privacy practices and user data storage. In response, DeepSeek stated earlier that it owns secure servers in China to address these concerns.

Seoul's Personal Information Protection Commission stated that the application will not be available in app stores until the privacy review is completed and secured. DeepSeek has not commented on the decision.

Notably, the application is no longer available for download in the country, but users who have already downloaded it can still access and use the chatbot. Seoul authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution while using it until the privacy review is completed.

It is worth noting that Italy has blocked DeepSeek from processing users' data and is currently investigating the application. Australia has completely banned the app, and lawmakers in the US are proposing a total ban on the application in the country due to privacy concerns.

Commenting on this, the Chinese government stated: “The politicization of economic, trade, and technological issues.”

DeepSeek recent popularity

DeepSeek’s recent surge in popularity over the past week has sparked excitement in China and concern in the United States. The company is now strongly competing with ChatGPT at a much lower cost.

DeepSeek released its V3 model with significant features that outperform ChatGPT and Llama. Developers can now download and modify the new DeepSeek V3 model to perform multiple tasks, including coding and translation.

The company officially surpassed ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, in United Stated App store downloads last month.
