ALBAWABA – DeepSeek, the Chinese artificial intelligence lab which develops open-source large language models, officially surpassed ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, in United Stated App store downloads.

DeepSeek tops US App store downloads

The famous Chinese company stated that its application is now the number one most downloaded in the US App store. DeepSeek successfully managed to surpass multiple major competitors, including ChatGPT, which now ranks as number three.

Notably, Liang Wenfeng, the Chinese entrepreneur, businessman, and CEO of DeepSeek, developed the company’s AI model using lower-cost Nvidia H800 chips.

DeepSeek surpassed other models, including Meta's Llama 3.1 (405B), OpenAI's GPT-4, and Alibaba's Qwen 2.5 (72B), in programming competitions hosted on the Codeforces platform. (Shutterstock)

Wenfeng invested less than $6 million in the new model, using around 2,000 Nvidia chips. In contrast, Meta and OpenAI rely on Nvidia H100 GPUs, which are currently facing export issues due to Chinese trade sanctions.

DeepSeek V3 model

It is worth noting that DeepSeek V3 has been released with significant features that outperform ChatGPT and Llama. Developers can now download and modify the new DeepSeek V3 model to perform multiple tasks, including coding, translation, and writing articles and emails, according to TechCrunch and Al Arabiya.

The company stated that the new model outperformed many well-known artificial intelligence (AI) models on the market, which are typically only accessible via an API.

Notably, DeepSeek surpassed other models, including Meta's Llama 3.1 (405B), OpenAI's GPT-4, and Alibaba's Qwen 2.5 (72B), in programming competitions hosted on the Codeforces platform.
