Shell Renewables announced their first bio-fuelled CHP plant today with the establishment of a joint venture with Swedish utility company, Sala-Heby Energi AB.
The joint venture, Sala-Heby Kraftvنrme AB, will operate the 10 MWe and 22 MWth plant, fuelled entirely by wood residues from forestry and wood processing operations. The plant will supply heat to more than 500 homes in the town of Sala, north of Stockholm.
The use of bio-fuel is well established in Sweden especially within district heating and CHP plants. As an environmentally friendly fuel it is supported by the Swedish Government through financial incentives, which are offered to users.
Peter Langcake, head of Shell Renewables Biomass explained the importance of the potential joint venture: “This is the first CHP venture for Shell Renewables Biomass, but the Royal Dutch/Shell Group has much experience in developing large engineering projects. We recognise the value of Sala-Heby Energi’s knowledge of the local market for heat and power and it is very important for the success of this and future projects that Shell Renewables forms alliances with companies with the experience, philosophy and vision that fits well with our own.”
