Clearly demonstrating its corporate commitment to supporting the initiatives of the Dubai government, Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL) played a key role in the extremely successful Water Energy Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2012), which took place at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre from 13 to 15 March 2012. A strategic sponsor of the event, DUBAL not only worked closely with the organisers – the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) – but also participated actively in the WETEX 2012.

Three main avenues were leveraged:

An exhibition stand at WETEX 2012 which highlighted DUBAL’s world-leading in-house developed DX and DX+ reduction cell technologies that, by operating at higher amperages, not only increase productivity but also reduce the impact of DUBAL’s smelter operations on the environment through improved energy efficiency and minimised emission levels. The spotlight fell on DUBAL’s commitment to energy conservation, specifically the fuel-efficiency enabled by the unique cogeneration configuration of the company’s captive 2,350 megawatt power station (at 30˚C); and its energy-saving successes achieved through implementing a combination of the initiatives mandated by the DSCE in terms of Dubai’s 2030 energy conservation strategy and DUBAL’s own innovations in this area. This was further endorsed by illustrating DUBAL’s successful and sustained achievement of the highest standards in environmental protection, from optimizing raw material usage through effective energy-use management to minimizing environmental impact through stringent management of air emissions, effluent discharge and waste.

Participation by Abdulnasser Kalban, General Manager: Power & Desalination Maintenance, in the Smart Grid seminar, one of several such forums hosted in parallel to the exhibition. Kalban’s presentation, entitled “Smart Micro Grid” covered DUBAL’s continued efforts to share knowledge about its smelter micro grid and migration towards being smart micro-grid based on WETEX foundations.

Sharing of DUBAL’s expertise by Nedhal Al Rahma, Senior Support Manager: Power & Desalination Operations, during a round-table discussion, where he focused specifically on “Evaporative Coolers on DUBAL’s large combined cycle gas turbines”. Nedhal outlined how DUBAL is striving toward maintaining sustainability throughout the operational process, by sharing best practice learned from installing Evaporative Coolers on the company‘s continuous duty Combined Cycle Power Plants.

DUBAL’s support and participation full endorsed the focus of WETEX 2012, namely advanced technologies in the areas of energy (i.e. fossil fuel, nuclear, renewable, power generation, smart grids, efficiency, conservation); water (i.e. management, treatment, desalination, utilities); and environment (i.e. waste management, green buildings and CO2 reduction solutions). It also helped achieve the objectives of WETEX 2012, specifically the aim to bring together the scientific, engineering, technology, and management communities, thereby facilitating strategic partnerships to pursue innovative and sustainable solutions that will support the efforts of governmental agencies and civic authorities in these three key areas (i.e. water, energy and the environment).
