Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s Siemens focussed on 3D printing.

The two organisations will work under the framework of the RTA”s current 3D printing initiative, which was rolled out in the second half of last year, to produce parts for the Dubai Metro’s subsystems.

The agreement will seek to “extend the sources of spare parts for the Dubai metro and increase their availability, reduce obsolescence issues and enable getting improved parts with better performance and increased features,” according to a statement.

“This step would certainly consolidate RTA’s constant efforts to back up Dubai’s endeavours in becoming the world’s smartest city in three years, which would definitely contribute to make the residents of Dubai, its visitors and tourists happier and more satisfied,” said Abdul Mohsin Ibrahim Younes, CEO of the RTA’s Rail Agency.

Siemens is already partnering with Abu Dhabi’s Strata to produce 3D-printed parts for the interiors of Etihad’s aircraft.

The new agreement forms part of Dubai’s strategy to become a leader in 3D printing, with plans to produce 25 per cent of buildings using the method by 2030.
