(Jordan Times) – Representatives of 16 local non-governmental organizations concerned with the environment and human rights will gather in Amman on Sunday to begin a five-day workshop on using computers and the Internet. The event will take place under the guidance of a British media training and consultancy institute, the Thomson Foundation.
English teacher Julie McCurdy, a freelance consultative trainer for the foundation, will provide instruction on dealing with the disabled, human rights, the environment, and how women and children can better utilize computers and the Internet to gather information and communicate. Sessions will include material on how to access the Internet, make use of e-mail, find relevant information, print documents and set up databases.
The initiative, a joint effort of the Jordan Sports Federation for the Handicapped, the National Society for the Disabled in Lebanon and the Thomson Foundation, is funded by the European Union-Meda Democracy Programme. The training course, to be held under the patronage of HRH Prince Ra'd, who heads the Sports Federation for the Handicapped, is the first of five workshops to be delivered this year by consultative experts from the foundation.
The upcoming workshops will train NGO staff members in leadership skills, how to deal with the media, and how to design, produce and print publications. One of the five workshops will train journalists on how to cover human rights issues.
Local NGOs taking part in this week's workshop include the Mustaqbal Club for the Physically Challenged, the Salam Club for the Disabled, Friends of Earth Society, the Women's Society for Illiteracy, and the Humanitarian Forum for Human Rights.
Established in 1962, the UK-based Thomson Foundation employs hundreds of specialized freelance consultants to deliver training seminars and courses on an international scale.
