ALBAWABA – In a move toward the sustainability of clean energy, Iraq announced the launch of a new waste incineration project, estimated to cost approximately $500 million.
Iraq’s new waste incineration project
As Iraq has been experiencing a major energy shortage for decades, the country has relied on importing electricity and gas from Iran for a long time.
Iraq has decided to launch an innovative new waste incineration project, announced by Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, the Prime Minister of Iraq. The $500 million project aims to convert waste into energy, with a planned capacity of about 100 megawatts in the Nahrawan area, southeast of Baghdad.

According to the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, the project will be implemented in collaboration with Shanghai SUS Environment, a leading Chinese provider of comprehensive environmental services. The Chinese company will supply Iraq with the first model of the project, which can process about 3,000 tons of waste per day and generate up to 100 megawatts of electricity.
Notably, the United States (US) recently decided to end Iraq’s exemption for importing all types of gas from Iran. As a result, the country has decided to implement this project to address its energy shortage.
The Ministry of Electricity further explained that this new waste incineration project will cost approximately $497,985,000 and is set to be completed within the next two years. Shanghai SUS Environment will be granted 25 years to invest in this innovative project, which will benefit the environment and help generate energy sources for Iraq.
