Security failed to do their job when Spain ended Israel’s 2018 World Cup hopes with a 1-0 win.
Following the game, which Spain won through an Asier Illarramendi goal, six Israeli fans rushed onto the pitch, as reported by The Times of Israel.
One of those fans reportedly peeled off and approached Real Madrid midfielder Isco, at which point a knife fell from his hands.
He was immediately stopped by police, who weren’t speculating on what his plans were.
Spain topped Group G with nine wins out of a possible win and a draw against Italy the only blot on their copybook.
But Israel finished in fourth, comfortably missing out on a potential play-off place, which was taken by Italy.
Israel hadn’t reached a World Cup since 1970 and faced troubles with security throughout qualifying.
Their qualifier against Albania last November had to be moved from Shkodra to Tirana after warnings of a potential terrorist attack.
But, in happier news, Spain’s game against Israel threw up a real blast of nostalgia for Premier League fans.
At the age of 37 Yossi Benayoun came off the bench having celebrated cap number 100 prior to the game.
The former West Ham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and QPR midfielder is now seeing out his days at Beitar Jerusalem.
