Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix 2016 will see the world's top motorsport return to the previous system of qualifying after officials decided drop the new system introduced at the Australian Grand Prix.

Team officials, drivers and analysts slammed the new rules implemented at Melbourne where drivers faced rolling eliminations throughout the qualifying.

The qualifying session embarrassingly petered out with Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg not bothering to improve their times against Mercedes world champion Lewis Hamilton in the final minutes, leaving bewildered fans watching an empty track.

Team officials and managers discussed the issue with FIA race director Charlie Whiting today at Albert Park here ahead of Sunday's season-opening grand prix and unanimously resolved to immediately drop the new system.

F1 Commission and World Motor Sport Council will ratify the decision ahead of the next grand prix in Bahrain from April 4.
