Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, over 3.9 million people have fled Ukraine and over 1,100 civilians have been killed, according to data from the United Nations.
The invasion, launched under Russian President Vladimir Putin's orders, has displaced millions more within the country and left Ukrainian cities like Mariupol in utter ruins. And although Ukrainian forces have been able to stop Russian forces from advancing on key locations like Kyiv, Russia has relied on artillery, missiles and airstrikes to compensate where its ground forces have failed.
The Russian strikes have not been limited to military targets and have destroyed civilian residential buildings, medical facilities and in one particularly horrendous strike a children's hospital, which injured and killed pregnant women. As of March 28, the U.N. has confirmed 103 children have been killed in Ukraine following Russia's invasion.
