MENA cleans up its act on Earth Day with nine green activities

Earth Day is officially middle-aged this year. While the earth is ageing, the 45-year-old worldwide environmental movement shows no signs of slowing down! More than one billion people from 190 countries will celebrate Earth Day 2015. How are you using YOUR power to change climate change, reverse pollution, and steer the planet towards a more sustainable future?

Scientists warn that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening planetary survival. Don’t buy the larger global warming debate? So maybe look instead at other aspects of our modern lifestyle that need immediate intervention, particularly here in the water-parched, energy-unstable, and increasingly desertified Middle East.

And don’t get us started on plastic pollution! You encounter it in all of our cities and - more shockingly - in magnificent MENA eco-touristic destinations from Egypt’s Red Sea dive sites to Oman’s awe-inspiring caves. Jordan’s Petra is plastered in plastic bags, and even the magnificent nighttime stars in Wadi Rum can’t distract from discarded trash left along its sandy expanses.

Our planet is worth saving. Now is our moment to act. Here are some of the Earth Day activities happening with our neighbors, so seek out what’s happening in your zip code and join in, because the power (and responsibility!) to change the world is with everyone.

Morocco celebrates Earth Day 2015 with an array of localized events including urban mural projects, guerrilla-gardening activities, educational programs in schools and competitions in creative writing and painting. Iraq’s oddly-named NGO, Iraqi Greenish Peace, conducts projects with schoolchildren throughout the country, in cooperation with international NGOs. Through educational programs (increasingly challenging given national instability) they replace water-intensive school flower gardens with 100s of olive trees. Support them via their Facebook page.
