Children in the occupied Palestinian territories grow up in an uncertain atmosphere where the threat of violence is never far away. Political tensions frequently result in outbreaks of violence. And this situation has worsened still further in recent months.
In Gaza, access to food, water, electricity, and basic necessities are regularly disrupted as a result of the 10-year blockade imposed by Israel. Ongoing settlement construction in the West Bank has seen many Palestinian families lose their homes - further fuelling tensions in the area.
Children in both Gaza and the West Bank grow up with the threat of violence - both at home and at school. Basic child rights are also frequently violated - the military arrest and detention of children as young as 12 is disturbingly common.
In the West Bank, violence against children remains a grave concern; in homes, in schools and through violent exchanges with Israeli forces in which young people are injured and killed.
A vicious cycle of political violence and retaliation persists, and many Palestinian children experience constant fear of demolition of their homes and schools or conflict with neighbouring settlements. Safe play areas are scarce and children playing in the street are exposed to risks of injury or violence.
