Ramada Downtown Dubai welcomes Bollywood celebrity Shabana Azmi

Ramada Downtown Dubai, located in Dubai’s most prestigious and vibrant district, was the official residence of award-winning thespian and noted activist Shabana Azmi during her stay in the city to act in a play titled Broken Images.

Ms. Azmi is famous for her roles in Bollywood movies with a career spanning over four decades.  She made her film debut in 1974 with Ankur which won her many prestigious awards and became one of the leading actresses of parallel cinema, an Indian New Wave movement known for its serious content and neo-realism. Ms. Azmi has appeared in over 120 Hindi films in both mainstream and independent cinema. Some of her best known films are Nishant (1973), Amar Akbar Anthony (1979), Arth (1982) and Parineeta (2005), to name a few. She also played a brothel owner in Mandi (1983) to the lonely housewife Radha who falls in love with her sister-in-law in Fire (1996).  

A well known human activist, she also runs the NGO Mijwa Welfare Society, an organisation that was instrumental in making a village in Uttar Pradesh self-sufficient and often addresses issues regarding women and child empowerment. Ms. Azmi is India’s representative to the World Economic Forum held in Davos.
