ALBAWABA - Unconfirmed reports emerged on social media that Egypt has agreed to construct a new border crossing between Gaza and Egypt following the destruction of the Rafah border crossing.

On May 7, the Israeli army announced controlling the Gaza Strip side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, launching an attack on Rafah city in southern Gaza. Israeli tanks were seen destroying the crossing from the Palestinian side.

The Rafah gateway was critical for both aid and individuals seeking to leave for Egypt. Currently, the border is still closed and no humanitarian aid is being delivered through the Rafah crossing.

Did Egypt agree to open new border crossing with Gaza after Rafah closure?

New speculations and rumors are being widely circulating on social media claiming that Egypt and Israel agreed to open a new border crossing between Cairo and the Gaza Strip, which will reportedly be controlled by the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Journalist Injy Al-Qadi reported on X (formerly Twitter) citing Al-Hadath sources that a new border crossing will be established between Egypt and Gaza near the seashore and will be taken over by the Palestinian Authority.

A person posted on X: "Arab reports mentioned that Israel and Egypt are working on establishing a new crossing on the Philadelphi Maritime Corridor, which will be handed over to the Palestinian Authority. However, it remains unclear how the PA will be given responsibility for transporting goods to the Gaza Strip. This move raises questions about the mechanisms of transportation and management in the area."

However, Sky News Arabic confirmed citing sources that no new border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will be constructed and the news circulating is untrue. It further reaffirmed the Palestinian side's decision to reopen the Rafah crossing after the Israeli army's withdrawal from it.
