ALBAWABA - The Swedish government has unveiled a new initiative offering 350,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $34,000) to migrants who voluntarily return to their home countries and give up their legal residency and citizenship in Sweden.
Scheduled to start in early 2026, this "Voluntary Return Support Program" aims to encourage migrants to leave Sweden by providing substantial financial incentives. The program also extends support to individuals who arrived in Sweden through family reunification.
Under the current system, migrants who choose to relinquish their residency or citizenship receive 10,000 kronor (about $970) for adults and 5,000 kronor for minors, with a family maximum of 40,000 kronor. This amount has not significantly influenced many to leave Sweden.
Official data shows that Sweden’s migrant population stands at around 2.76 million, constituting 28% of the total population. The largest groups are Syrians, totaling approximately 244,000, followed by Iraqis, numbering around 195,000.
