ALBAWABA - As the US 2024 elections are approaching, Americans are eagerly waiting to start casting ballots in the upcoming presidential race.

As for presidential candidates, former US President Donald Trump represents the Republicans, meanwhile, current Vice President of the US, Kamala Harris, is the Democratic nominee.

Aside from Kamal Harris and Donald Trump, multiple US candidates are running for third-party candidates; Cornel West, Jill Stein, and Chase Oliver.

Since the start of the latest race between all the candidates in the 2024 US elections, Al Bawaba highlights former US presidents whose pictures remain on the money and coins.

1. Abraham Lincoln: $5 Bill and Penny

Ex-American President Abraham Lincoln's picture is placed on the front of the $5 bill and penny. The $5 bill dates back to 1914, meanwhile, the penny was produced and issued in 1909. 

Abraham Lincoln served as US president from 1861 until his assassination in 1865.

2. Thomas Jefferson: $2 Bill and Nickel

Thomas Jefferson, who served as 3rd US president from 1801 to 1809. His picture is printed on the $2 bill as well as on the nickel. 

The Jefferson nickel began circulating in 1938 after a sculptor, named Felix Schlag, won a competition.

3. Franklin D. Roosevelt: Dime

The 32nd US President Roosevelt’s dime was made to honor his effort in supporting March of Dimes, an organization to assist kids who suffer from polio.

4. George Washington: $1 Bill and Quarter

The portrait of George Washington, 1st US president, has been displayed in the center of the obverse of the $1 bill, since 1869.

5. John F. Kennedy: Half Dollar Coin

The half-dollar was first released into markets in 1964. The fifty-cent coin was issued by the United States Mint as a memorial to the assassinated 35th US president.

John F. Kennedy (JFK), who was the youngest person to become president, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time on Nov. 22, 1963. 

6. Alexander Hamilton: $10 Bill

In fact, Alexander Hamilton was never a president of the US, but he was a military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first US secretary of the treasury from 1789 to 1795 during George Washington's presidency.

7. Andrew Jackson: $20 Bill

The portrait of Jackson, the 7th president of the US, replaced Grover Cleveland’s on the $20 bill.

8. Ulysses S. Grant: $50 Bill

Ulysses S. Grant, who served from 1869 to 1877 as the 18th President of the United States, has been on the $50 bill since 1913. 

9. Benjamin Franklin: $100 Bill

Benjamin Franklin, the other non-US president placed on dollars, is well-known for his advice on frugality. His portrait has been for over 15 years on the $100 bill.

Franklin was a leading writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher and political philosopher.
