ALBAWABA - Police in Baghdad announced arresting two foreigners; a man and a woman, in charges of human trafficking, local media reported.
Iraqi National Security Agency confirmed in a statement that a gang consisting man and a woman were arrested after they tried to traffic a 4-day-old infant to sell it.
The gang was able to enter the country with a 4-day-old child in their possession, intending to sell him to someone after a prior agreement between them for $40,000.
Following arrest by Baghdad police, the foreign gang also admitted that it had previously sold a 14-day-old child.
In another incident, the agency confirmed the arrest of another person accused of human trafficking, along with 3 children, without any identification documents.
It is noteworthy that human trafficking has spread widely after 2003, at a time when international reports confirm that the government in Baghdad does not meet the minimum standards for eliminating the phenomenon.
The news of the 4-year-old baby sparked wide anger on social media where many requested the toughest punishment against the gang, while many lashed out at authorities for placing the baby on a table in the picture with the gang.
A person said: "They placed the poor child on the evidence table." Another added: "Ok, Ihy is the baby left next to other evidence!!! They should have got a nurse or a baby sitter for him."
