ALBAWABA - Abdel-Rahman Milad, nicknamed Al-Bidja, was shot to death by unknown armed men in Tripoli on Sunday, Libyan media reported.

In detail, unknown gunmen assassinated the commander of the Libyan Naval Academy, Abdul Rahman Milad, or "Al-Bidja", whose name is associated with human and oil smuggling.

According to the media, armed men opened fire at the car of "Al-Bidja" in the Sayyad area west of the capital, Tripoli, in an incident that sparked security tension in the city of Zawiya. A video allegedly showing the car of the Libyan commander after he was assassinated was posted on Facebook.

Abdel-Rahman Milad began his job as an officer in the Libyan Coast Guard before being promoted to the rank of Commander of the Libyan Navy, but he is known to be one of the world's most wanted human traffickers.

He committed many violations against migrants and he is also involved in sinking their boats in the open sea, in addition to his oil smuggling operations.

Al-Bidja leads an armed militia operating in the Zawiya region and is on top of the UN Security Council sanctions list.

The Libyan commander was arrested by the GNA in October 2020 for his involvement in human trafficking, migrant smuggling and fuel smuggling accusations, but he was released in April 2021 after chaos in Libya over his detention.
