ALBAWABA - A video went viral on X (formerly Twitter) reportedly showing the first same-sex marriage in the country since the approval of the latest anti-LGBTQ+ law, Iraqi local media reported.
Al Iraq Plus posted a video on their X account allegedly of a proposal ceremony between two women in the country.
It wrote: "The first same-sex marriage in Iraq.. after the adoption of the new anti-gay law!!." "Where is Iraq heading? what do you think? Do you expect the same-sex marriage law to be passed one day in Iraq? Especially with the large number of this group in Iraq."
In the clip, two women were seen one, who was wearing a black skirt and top, was on one knee on the floor while handing a ring to her "lover".
The other spread her hand and accepted the ring while holding flowers in the other hand. The first woman then kissed the hand of her girlfriend and after that, they hugged each other.
In the footage, one of the females said: "I got engaged," while the other added: "Just to prove that I'm the man and I requested to marry her."
A person commented on the video: "What's your sources? Did this really take place inside Iraqi territory? We don't believe everything you share."
In April, Iraq passed a new anti-LGBTQ+ law criminalizing same-sex relations with harsh prison sentences of up to 15 years.
The United Nations released a statement saying it was "alarmed" by a new anti-gay law passed by Iraq’s parliament.
