ALBAWABA - Animal rights activists were angered after hundreds of cats were left to suffer in the UAE desert. However, it wasn't clear who abandoned them there or why.

Animal rescuers said they were terrified after seeing this horrific scene after over 100 cats and kittens were left to face their fate in the al-Falah area of the UAE capital, close to the emirate’s Falcon Hospital, with no food or water.

Local media said that over 50 cats were found dead in stages of rigor mortis in the desert, while another 84 were found alive. Meanwhile, those found alive were suffering from dehydration and malnutrition.

Abu Dhabi authorities vowed legal action after announcing the opening of an investigation into reports about cats being abandoned in the desert.

According to local media, many of the cats were found dead while others were caught barely able to survive harsh circumstances in the Abu Dhabi desert.

Khaleej Times reported that the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) started a probe “immediately” upon receiving the report. It vowed to take all “relevant administrative and legal measures”.
