ALBAWABA - Right after signing an executive order to rename the 'Gulf of Mexico' to the 'Gulf of America,' and amid his 2025 inauguration, US President Donald Trump has once again made headlines after sparking debate and speculation on whether other international countries will follow his lead or not.
While claims indicate that the US claimed the majority of the ocean basin, ownership is still up for debate since it's placed in the middle of the United States of America, Mexico, and Cuba. According to The Guardian, the Gulf of Mexico is also important for the economy as it generates profitable income due to fishing, maritime transport, and oil and gas production, which is why Trump has his eyes set on it.
Trump said in a statement, "A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America" and later signed a State of Florida executive order to officially rename the 'Gulf of Mexico' to the 'Gulf of America.'
Can Trump rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America?
Earlier this month, the 47th US president expressed his interest in renaming the ocean basin. It didn't take long for Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum to clap back and reference an 1814 document, calling it "América Mexicana" (Mexican America). The matter in question sparked debate and speculations from social media users with some pointing out that there are more important things than changing the name of an ocean basin.
"Legally shouldn't Mexico be consulted or some other organization as it's an international body of water?"
"but the U.S. only owns 1/3rd of it, not all of it, so they can name their 3rd of it"
While the spotlight remains lit on renaming the 'Gulf of Mexico' to the 'Gulf of America,' several other social media users jokingly brought up topics like Trump's interest in taking over Canada as a 51st state of the US and his interest in also adding Denmark's Greenland to the equation.
