ALBAWABA - Following the fuss over Artificial intelligence-generated pictures, new AI-generated photos of prophets have caused wide controversy on social media. 

About a month ago, explicit AI-generated photos of American singer Taylor Swift took the internet by storm and pushed the US government to reconsider pictures created by this technology. Taylor's photos were first shared on X (formerly Twitter), in return, Elon Musk banned the search on the American singer.

Recently, AI has topped the talk of the media and platforms after AI-generated photos of prophets emerged widely causing debate about whether it is Haram or not.

In the past few hours, social media platforms have witnessed a wave of controversy caused by the circulation of AI-generated photos of a group of prophets and messengers.

Arab activists widely split on the status of the pictures, where some said it should be fine to generate photos of prophets while others condemned releasing such photos.

Many, rejected the idea of the AI-generated photos of prophets, based on previous rulings and fatwas prohibiting people from playing the roles of prophets and senior companions in TV series and films.

What's the Fatwa of generating AI photos of prophets?

Al Bawaba contacted a Sheikh in Jordan to ask about whether it is Halal or Haram to create AI photos of prophets, who in return responded by saying it is forbidden to make AI photos of prophets.

He added that representing the faces of prophets and messengers with artificial intelligence technology is “not permissible according to Islamic law.”
