3 Palestinians shot in the US for 'wearing Keffiyeh'

ALBAWABA - Three Palestinian students were attacked in the United States city of Vermont near a university campus. 

The three Palestinians were identified as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ali and Kenan Abdulhamid. According to local media, the three students were shot on Saturday. However, the motivation behind the attack is still unknown.

US police arrested a suspect in shooting 3 Palestinian students in the US, CNN reported on Monday. 

Sources revealed that the men were wearing Palestinian Keffiyehs while walking near the University of Vermont’s campus in the city of Burlington. Al Jazeera reported that the three Palestinians are studying at three different universities.

Many allegedly said that the three men might gotten attacked for supporting Palestine.

A person took to social media and posted: "Three young Palestinian men, Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ali and Kenan Abdulhamid, students at Brown and other US universities, were shot last night on their way to a family dinner in Burlington, USA. Their crime? Wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh. They are critically injured. And Six weeks ago, a 6-year-old Palestinian child was stabbed 26 times in a hate crime in Illinois. The hate crimes against Palestinians must stop. Palestinians everywhere need protection."

Another user added: "Hisham Awartani is a Palestinian American junior at Brown University, described as a math genius. He was shot by a white man yesterday in Vermont along with his friends Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ahmed. The 3 students were wearing Keffiyeh.
There are fears Hisham may not walk."

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) revealed that two of the victims are in intensive care while one was due to be released on Sunday.

The committee posted on the X platform (formerly Twitter): "This morning, ADC was contacted about the shooting, after reviewing the information, we have reason to believe that the shooting was motivated by the three victims being Arab.

"The three victims were wearing a Kuffiyeh and speaking Arabic. A man shouted and harassed the victims," it maintained.

A Jordanian comedian and influencer who is said to be the relative of one of the three Palestinians shot in Vermont posted a photo of Hisham Awartani and reassured that he is doing fine.
