The Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court has reduced a 15-year jail term passed against an Emirati involved in killing his wife to only five years.

The case dates back to May 30 last year, when the defendant, identified only as R.M., shot four bullets at his wife over family disputes.

The defense lawyer told the court that the lower court ignored the fact that the victim was extremely enraged at his client during a heated argument over family issues.

"This extreme rage is an excuse for reducing the jail term as per Article 96 of the punitive law because my client was neither planning nor meaning to kill his wife," he said, requesting mercy for the defendant.

The accused, in his forties, was referred to the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court which ordered him to serve 15 years in jail for being convicted of shooting his wife dead with his pistol.

The couple was home alone when they started a heated argument. The husband, getting up in arms, drew a pistol he had in his pocket, and shot his wife, who is also in her forties, in her shoulder while she was trying to stop him from using it.

Shocked, the terrified and bleeding wife shouted for help, but that made her husband more furious. He shot three more bullets into several parts of her body

The RAK police, alerted of the gunshot, rushed to the site where the husband surrendered himself to the officers who appeared in his house.

The victim was rushed to the Saqr Hospital for treatment and medical care. Due to her critical condition, she was admitted to the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, she could not survive the serious injuries she received and died two weeks later.
