The Zambian government has launched a food security program aimed at reducing poverty levels among vulnerable farmers in the country, Finance Minister Katele Kalumba announced Wednesday.

"I am happy to officiate at the launch of this very important and timely initiative, the food security pack," Kalumba said, adding that poverty reduction through improved food security at national and household levels remains the core objective of his government policy.

He, however, said the majority of rural farmers were still failing to utilize various government incentives in order to reduce poverty.

"It is government policy that every small scale farmer should have one acre of cereal crop, one acre of sweet potato or cassava and one acre of groundnuts or beans," Kalumba said.

Under the food security program, small scale farmers would be given farm inputs to empower them economically, Kalumba said while explaining that re-payment would be in form of food produce -- LUSAKA (AFP)
