The UN General Assembly accepted Yugoslavia as a member of the United Nations on Wednesday, eight years after it declared vacant the seat held by the Belgrade government.
A resolution to admit Yugoslavia was introduced by France on behalf of the European Union and 16 associated states, and adopted by acclamation.
The French ambassador to the United Nations, Jean-David Levitte, said Yugoslavia's admission to the world body was "an important step towards reconciliation, stability and peace in a region that has been so sorely tested." -- UNITED NATIONS (AFP)
