A United Nations peace conference set for May 28 in Geneva has been postponed indefinitely, senior Yemeni politicians told AP late Sunday.
The conference was aimed at reaching a political solution to end armed conflict in Yemen between Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi insurgents and the government, headed by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, currently in exile in Saudi Arabia.
Officials from various Yemeni political parties told AP that no new date had been set for the talks.
The Houthis had backed the talks, though President Hadi had urged the insurgents withdraw from occupied cities before attending the conference.
Houthi leaders had rejected a previous offer in March by Gulf Cooperation Council member states to hold peace talks in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
Since late March, a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states has waged air strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, killing nearly 2,000 people and intensifying sectarian tensions. Many Yemenis await desperately needed humanitarian aid amidst severe food and fuel shortages due to the ongoing violence.
