Opposition sources downplayed on Tuesday comments by Yemen's president he is ready to step down. Ali Abdullah Saleh said Tuesday that he will step down within 90 days of an agreement in accordance to the initiative raised by Gulf Cooperation Council.
"When an agreement on the Gulf initiative is reached, and when it is signed, and (it is agreed) on the operational mechanism and when elections are held, the president will leave," the Yemeni leader said. Asked if there was a time frame for his departure, he said: "It is defined. It is within 90 days" of an agreement.
On his part, Shawky al Qadi, a member of the Yemeni parliament, said Saleh was "a liar, therefore everything he says, especially after the eruption of the Yemeni revolution is just one in a series of deceptive remarks, whic became known to the people." The Yemeni MP stressed that Saleh's statements are not in accordance with the provisions of the Gulf initiative, which calls him to step down in the first stage.
Al Qadi conveyed that the Arab and international community realized that Saleh will not sign the initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
