An overnight ambush has left two members of Yemen’s Popular Resistance Committees dead, AFP reports.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack but the assailants “are presumed to be in al Qaeda,” a member of the pro-government militia told AFP.
The two men killed were gunned down in the northeast of Zinjibar which is the capital of Abyan province.
The Popular Resistance Committees are comprised of Yemenis from tribes. The group backed a government offensive that pushed AQAP from Abyan province in June of 2012.
AQAP has taken advantage of instability in Yemen and is highly active in the countryside. Many analysts view al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula as the most lethal al Qaeda affiliate.
