Eight soldiers were killed and six were wounded on Monday when unidentified gunmen launched an attack on a military checkpoint in Hadramawt province in southeast Yemen, military sources reported.
One source, speaking to Agence France Presse (AFP), blamed Al Qaeda-linked militants for the attack.
"Armed men aboard several vehicles attacked a checkpoint near Reida," 135 kilometres (85 miles) east of Hadramawt provincial capital Mukalla, "killing eight soldiers and wounding six more", one military source told AFP.
Another official reported that Monday's attack seemed to be the work of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, widely regarded to be the most dangerous branch of the Sunni militant group. It is active in south and southeast Yemen, and is responsible for dozens of acts of terrorism against Yemen state security forces and foreigners in the country.
