Indian software giant Wipro has won a Dubai e-government contract to maintain its portal, in a deal approaching Dh3.67 million, according to the Gulf News.
Azim Premji, chairman of the firm, was quoted by the Dubai-based paper as saying that the deal, which covers software maintenance on a round-the-clock basis, would likely be a recurring annual revenue source, and could lead to "significantly larger" contracts.
The company has also grown its presence at the Dubai Internet City (DIC)-based data center to 30 qualified staff as it seeks to aggressively hunt down opportunities in the region.
Wipro, a relatively late entrant to the DIC, noted that the Gulf Cooperation Council itself was on the threshold of adopting new technology, with Dubai being in the vanguard. Internet and mobile telephony penetration levels are also soaring, with regional companies also evincing interest in Indian technology companies, the daily said.
“The emirate has built a lot of credibility for itself, basing its reputation on a strong commercial platform,” said the Wipro chief, who is on visit to Dubai to meet senior state officials.
He added that "Dubai has all the elements in place to become a strong IT center, and I see local companies leveraging Indian corporates' software strengths to develop local capabilities."
Business Today, a leading fortnightly business magazine in India, has ranked Wipro as India's Most Valuable Company. In their annual study of 4,894 Indian companies, carried out in association with the Center of Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Business Today has ranked the Top 500 Indian companies, with Wipro at the top of the list.
"Chairman Premji is convinced of the long-term value proposition of his company - which is based on technical competency, quality processes, and the advantage of offshore development" the magazine article said.
In a year that has seen many of the technology titans come crashing down, Wipro's top ranking in Business Today's study shows that a company driven by strong fundamentals like quality, integrity and supreme customer service would always remain the favorite of investors and customers alike – Albawaba.com
