A rocket most likely targeting a refinery hit a Western Libyan town and killed one Filipino and wounded eight other workers late Sunday, Reuters reported Monday.
Town council head Mohamed Khadrawi told Reuters the rocket had hit an area in the town of Zawiya near the workers' car, while the foreigners were heading home from work.
Several Tripoli officials said the internationally recognized government, based in the East, was responsible for the attack. But a source allied to the East-based government denied claims that the government had fired the rocket in the direction of Zawiya or a nearby refinery that produces 120,000 barrels of oil a day.
Rival factions have been in conflict in the Zawiya area over a power struggle in the oil-producing country. Libya has recently held peace talks in Morocco, during which the UN proposed a unity government that would include representatives from independent faction.
Khadrawi said three Filipinos, one African and four Libyans were injured in the strike.
