The Daesh (ISIS) branch in Libya released a video late Monday appearing to show the militants executing a Tunisian in the eastern city of Benghazi, AFP reported.

According to AFP, the extremists in the footage said the Tunisian was being executed for spying for the internationally recognized government.

The video showed the man kneeling in front of armed men and being shot dead after a militant read out the sentence for "espionage."

The man was believed to be a 39-year-old baker living in Benghazi, where the 2011 Libyan revolution began, AFP reported.

Libya has seen an extremist insurgency since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi created two rival governments competing for power, destabilizing the North African country.
