ALBAWABA - President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Morocco will name one of its greatest highway projects after him. “Such an honor, thank you King Mohammed VI,” Trump said.

On Truth Social, Trump posted a promotional video for the project, dubbing the new route the “President Donald J. Trump Highway.” The 1,055-km (655-mile) highway runs along Morocco’s Atlantic coast joining the cities of Tiznit, Laayoune and Dakhla, including parts of the Moroccan-controlled enclave of Western Sahara, the video said.

The video praised Trump’s “historic courage,” citing his recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in his first term, a position his administration reaffirmed when he returned to office in 2025. Trump said he hopes to travel the entire length of the roadway in the near future.

The declaration comes as Morocco continues to invest extensively in infrastructure in Western Sahara, including the building of a $1 billion deep-water port in Dakhla, a project designed to boost trade and regional connections.

Since Morocco took control of most of the region in 1975, Western Sahara has been the focus of a territorial dispute that has lasted for decades. The Algeria-backed Polisario Front continues to pursue independence for the territory and the United Nations continues to consider its final status unresolved.

Trump recognized Morocco’s claim in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, which saw Morocco reestablish diplomatic relations with Israel in exchange for U.S. support of its position on Western Sahara. His government thereafter reiterated the strategy and promoted American involvement in infrastructure projects across the area.

The reported naming of highways is also part of a broader pattern during Trump’s second term, in which his name has been added to a number of public sites. President Donald J. Trump International Airport was officially designated earlier this month at Palm Beach International Airport. Republican allies have made numerous bids to name large transportation centers after the president, although several are still pending.
