The United States said Wednesday that terrorists may be planning attacks against US targets in the Gulf, the Arabian peninsula and Turkey, and warned US citizens to be on their guard.
"The US government has indications that individuals may be planning terrorist actions against United States citizens and interests in the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Peninsula and Turkey," the State Department said in a statement.
"US citizens should exercise caution in considering travel to those areas at this time."
Americans already in the region should exercise prudence to reduce their vulnerability to terrorist attacks, it said.
"American citizens in the region should avoid large crowds and demonstrations, maintain a low profile and take appropriate steps to reduce their vulnerability," it said.
"Americans should vary routes and times for all required travel and treat mail from unfamiliar sources with suspicion."
The warning was issued in the wake of the suspected terrorist attack on the USS Cole, a guided missile destroyer, in Yemen last week in which 17 US sailors were killed.
It also followed nearly three weeks of fighting between Israelis and Palestinians which has left more then 100 people dead.
The warning was the latest from Washington urging US citizens to beware of heightened threats abroad.
On October 12, the United States issued a worldwide travel alert, warning Americans to step up their security ahead of possible anti-American demonstrations and terrorist attacks.
On October 4 a similar warning was issued as the situation in the Middle East deteriorated. Three days earlier, the State Department barred US diplomats from traveling to the Palestinian territories, parts of the holy city of Jerusalem and numerous towns in Israel where the clashes are centered -- WASHINGTON (AFP)
