The United States has said that the Palestinian Authority has obligations to carry out its commitments, particularly the fight against “terrorist” groups like Hamas and the Islamic Jihad “and to apprehend, to prosecute and to bring to justice those involved in terrorist acts.”
At the daily briefing on Wednesday, of which Albawaba.com received an e-mail copy, State Department Deputy Spokesman Philip Reeker told reporters that US President Bill Clinton wants “the people interested in violence to be off the streets.”
Reeker was responding to reports claiming that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has taken to dealing with some of the members of these Islamic groups, such as Hamas and the Islamic Jihad as part of his resistance, and that he is heightening his activities with these people.
”Obviously it is an issue that is of serious concern, and we will continue to monitor it through our embassy and our consulate there, “ said Reeker -- (Albawaba.com)
