Harold Koh, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, arrived Sunday in the north African country of Algeria, which has recently come under fire for failing to deal with alleged rights abuses.
During his two-day visit, Koh is due to hold talks with several high-ranking officials on the rights situation in Algeria, officials said.
Koh's arrival coincides with a visit by rights group Amnesty International, which recently slammed the Algerian authorities for not having taken any steps to deal with a "huge problem of impunity" the group claims prevails here.
