The United States on Monday expressed dissatisfaction with the United Nations and several members of the UN Security Council for taking an excessive amount of time to establish UN peacekeeping forces in the Darfur region of western Sudan.
US Ambassador John Bolton implied that UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan should speed the pace of preparations for the UN mission in Sudan, according to the AP.
Bolton also said that African and Arab diplomats on the Security Council needed to move more quickly.
Some 7,000 African troops are set to be replaced by the future UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur, where ongoing conflict has taken the lives of tens of thousands and forced over a million others to flee.
