As U.S. forces continue their campaign against Al-Qaeda in Tora Bora, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld arrived near the Afghan capital of Kabul Sunday.
Rumsfeld, who arrived at Bagram airbase, is the first senior American official to visit since the Taliban was ousted from power. He is set to address U.S. troops in the region, but further details of his visit were not disclosed.
Rumsfeld on Sunday told reporters that U.S. forces have located in the last 24 hours materials and other documents in a former al Qaeda base in Southern Afghanistan. The findings are being tested for hazardous and chemical materials. The items apparently were found in what U.S. officials believe is a suspected chemical, biological and nuclear weapons camp.
“There is a place called Tarnak Farms that has been interesting. They have now searched it and gathered up a good deal of materials and documentation and items to be tested for chemicals and radiation,” Rumsfeld conveyed.
On Saturday, Rumsfeld was in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, offering three former Soviet republics (Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia) closer U.S. military support in return for helping to fight terrorism in Afghanistan and elsewhere. (Albawaba.com)
