A US official announced Thursday that ten Guantanamo prisoners have been transferred to Oman, Reuters reports.

Omani officials confirmed that the prisoners, who are of Yemeni nationality, have arrived and will remain in the country for humanitarian reasons, as war rages on in their homeland.

The number of remaining prisoners at the notorious US prison has now reached a milestone low of 93.

US President Barack Obama promised to close Guantanamo during his 2009 election compaign.

The prison has controversially held foreign "terrorism suspects" since the 2001 September 11 attacks.
